RADIO GRANNY
A little container for needles and pins, in the shape of a lighthouse. She always kept it next to the radio, on her little table.
The range of radio programs was very limited then–one channel, transmitting mostly news and classical music. And from all controls possible, we had only one–the volume knob.
Twice a day, at midnight and at 6 am, it was time for The Hymn of the Soviet Union. Dressed for bed in pajamas, I never knew whether I should stand up for the Hymn or not. It was never explained. And in between the Hymns, for the duration of the entire night–just the sound of a metronome, an indication that the radio was working.
